Alice’s Dream Coat Ensemble in Liberty of London Wonderment

Posted on

From Liberty of London’s Alice in Wonderland inspired collection, Wonderment represents Alice’s emotions and confusion upon her meeting with the Mad Hatter: with unanswerable riddles and nonsensical poetry. The design was specially chosen by Mark Richards, Chairman of the Lewis Carroll Society. Student Tingh Zi Lui designed this print and it features symbols and characters inspired by Alice’s dreams.

The ensemble consists of a classic swing coat in iridescent blue jade silk dupioni, fully lined in the Wonderment print.  Dark jade pearls act as buttons and a looking glass brooch on the collar is a nod to Through the Looking Glass.  The accompanying party dress is made from the print.  A narrow belt in acid green with a crystal buckle defines the waist.  Layers of lime green tulle gives fullness to the skirt.

This fashion fits most 1/6 scale fashion dolls.

Bubble Dress in Liberty of London Meadow

Posted on

This vibrant floral from Liberty dates back to the 1930s and was printed from a wood block.  It comes in a number of colorways, and this one is perfect for a hot summer day in shades of yellow, peach, and bright orange with green leaves and stems.  The off the shoulder, dropped waist bodice has a ruched bust highlighted with orange and yellow beads and a center pearl.  A yellow silk bow belt defines the waist.  The voluminous bubble skirt is as light as air.

This fashion fits Silkstone Barbie (classic and articulated), Victoire Roux, FR2

Les Cerises Party Gown

Today I was inspired by this vintage gown to make my own version.

When I am inspired by real fashions, I rarely make an exact copy. It usually isn’t feasible to make exact copies in miniature, so I try to get the overall impression of the fashion.  I chose this gorgeous tone on tone Indian silk brocade woven with flowers in cherry pink silk.  Unlike most brocades, this one is as light as air with a beautiful hand.  The bodice has one shoulder and then a strap on the other side.  A dressmaker’s bow marks the point where the strap meets the bodice.  The skirt is extra full, with layers of fuchsia tulle.  A wide cummerbund draws attention to the tiny waist.

This fashion fits Silkstone Barbie.  It may fit other dolls, but please inquire as there is no guarantee.

As refreshing as the drink for which it is named, this pale pink sheath pops with color.  The print of whole and cut lemons is so perfect for a hot summer day.  A beaded collar of alternating bright and pale pink bugle beads interspersed with yellow seed beads is a touch of sparkle that makes this sheath so special.

Setting Sail

A form fitting sheath in a charming nautical print of sailboats on a pale blue ground.  Pops of red are picked up by the jaunty red and white checked silk band at the waist.  A gold circle brooch sparkles on the shoulder and a navy blue straw bucket bag with a red and white checked bow holds any essentials while at sea.  The bucket bag is the work of Maryann Roy.  I simply added the matching bow.

This fashion fits most 1/6 scale fashion dolls.

With Love from Porto Rockabilly Dress

Posted on

Porto is a coastal city in northwest Portugal known for its stately bridges and Port wine production. In the medieval Ribeira (riverside) district, narrow cobbled streets wind past merchants’ houses and cafes.  Some of the most ubiquitous and distinctive decorative mediums in Portugal are the Azulejo tiles that can be found in both the grandest churches and the humblest houses.  Most common colors are blue, white, and yellow.  This print from Cotton & Steel is a depiction of Azulejo tiles representing the friendly and contented cats that doze along the shore, hoping for fish.  The back ground is navy blue, while the cats are in white decorated with large blooms in sea blue and navy.  The sweetheart bodice has a pleated band that stretches under the bust and over the shoulders as straps.  The full skirt is cool and airy, perfect for an evening stroll along the river.
