Moss Rose

I have an unspoken rule in my house; if I get a new doll, she gets a new outfit.  I only collect Silkstones and Victoire, so it doesn’t happen often anymore.  The beautiful Evening in Montreal Victoire arrived yesterday and I was really excited to look through my fabrics to make her the perfect outfit.  I chose this striking Liberty of London print in navy blue with richly colored flowers in teal blue, dark red, gold, and green.  I chose this fabric because the teal blue matches her eyes and the dark red matches her lipstick.  I wanted a simple style to complement the busy pattern, but added drama at the neck with a dark red silk rolled collar and bow.

Meadow Bubble Dress

Marie Antoinette loved to visit the Petit Trianon when she needed to escape from court life at the Palace of Versailles.  There, she dressed more casually and spent time in the meadows.  This bubble dress, made from a Liberty of London print called Meadow, is scattered with lavender clover blossoms.  A low, square neckline is trimmed with delicate white lace and a silk ribbon bow.  I bought this fabric 20 years ago in Canterbury, England and have never used it until now.

A classic swing coat ensemble in a Tilda print cotton.  The fabric’s ground is blue, with a motif in sea glass green.  The pattern is of delicate tree branches, on which perch songbirds, who have escaped their nearby cages.  Pale aqua pearl buttons decorate the front and a tiny gold brooch of a bird in flight decorates the collar.  The coat is fully lined in Tiffany blue silk dupioni.  The slim, boat necked sheath dress is in the same print as the coat.  A silk ribbon rosette with sparkling beads acts as a brooch.

L’Oeillet Rose

Spring is beginning to make herself felt here in the Pacific Northwest. My daffodils are already coming up in the front garden, and the birds are getting busy thinking about nest building.

This suit is made from some spectacular silk brocade that I have had in my collection for years.  It is one of my very favorite fabrics.  Dark pink woven with white results in a shimmering, iridescent sheen.  A subtle woven check is the background for a scattering of small blooms.  Because it is a fully woven pattern, this brocade is equally beautiful on both sides.  I decided to work with that.  The sheath dress features the lighter flowers and darker background, while the jacket is made from the darker side of the fabric.  An iridescent carnation pink silk taffeta lines the jacket, while the same fabric is used for the pleated cummerbund.  Tiny pearl buttons decorate the jacket.  A golden butterfly, harbinger of Spring, decorates the collar of the jacket.  A pale pink satin flower hat with a cluster of pearl stamens finishes the ensemble.

The cropped jacket is made of black organza roses and fully lined in black organza.  Pearl accents are hand sewn in the center of assorted roses.

Can Can

Posted on

Victoire models a new version of the Pirouette fashion, but this one reminds me more of the antics that go on at the Moulin Rouge, rather than the ballet at the Opera Garnier, so I named it Can Can.  The classic combination of black and red combine to make a truly Parisian fashion (not to mention the Eiffel Towers embroidered into the lace).  The lace is black tulle embroidered with red and random crystals add sparkle.  Multiple layers of sparkly scalloped red tulle fill out the skirt.  A strapless black silk corset top with a red silk band and bow highlights the bust line.

Pirouette in Radiant Orchid

Posted on

The color Radiant Orchid is the Pantone color of 2014 and inspired this special outfit.  It is also the last of the “eyelash” border of this exquisite metallic Alençon lace that I bought in Paris last Spring.  I only have enough to make two, so this is it!

The strapless corset top is in Radiant Orchid silk and has a removable belt with a Swarovski crystal bow and pearl accent.  The skirt has a dropped waist in Radiant Orchid and flares into a divine full skirt of multiple layers of silver sparkle tulle and purple tulle, both with a scalloped edge.  The overlay of the skirt is fabulous purple Alençon or “eyelash” lace highlighted with silver.

Tilda Mini Rose

Posted on

One of my favorite fabric designers is Tone Finnanger of the Norwegian company Tilda.  A few months ago I ordered a number of fabrics from England, which seems to be the closest place to find Tilda fabrics.  Known for their whimsical and romantic prints, Tilda fabrics are perfect for 1/6 scale sewing.

This particular pattern is called “Christmas Play in Mini Rose.”  We have been having a great deal of wind and rainy weather, so I made a trench coat set in this grey printed cotton.  Tiny, old fashioned roses are scattered on a grey ground.  The coat is lined in an antique rose silk and sports pale pink faceted buttons.  The sheath dress has a rose printed skirt and antique rose silk top.  A pale pink silk sash and bow accent the waist.  A cluster of vintage velvet millinery flowers with Swarovski crystals in the centers as a brooch is a feminine touch.

The fabulous shoes are not included, but can be purchased from Ann Grahek’s shop on Etsy.  The amazing painting of Barbie as Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring was a gift from my dear friend Rogier Corbeau.
