I have had a large piece of this Liberty fabric in my stash for many years and it is one of my favorites.  It depicts the charming miniature carnations called “pinks” that were a staple in my father’s garden.  I loved them for their beautiful, ruffled petals and sweet, spicy scent.  The old-fashioned carnation name pinks comes from the serrated flower edges, which look as if cut with pinking shears. The name of the color pink is said to come from these perennials, which have been popular in gardens for hundreds of years.

The hostess gown has a boat neck and full skirt that is split in front to reveal the carnation pink silk capri pants underneath.  A hand-fringed sash in carnation pink silk ties simply at the waist.  The predominant colors in the print are pink and turquoise blue with touches of pale green.

Edna is a hand-drawn floral design of lily of the valley, stitchwort, wallflower, candytuft and ivy. Each of these flowers symbolize sweetness and humility, love, lasting beauty, indifference and immortality and fidelity.  The colors are striking, in shades of pink, red, green, and olive.  The boat necked party dress has an extra full skirt, given added volume from the layers of fuchsia tulle.  A large olive green silk bow sits on the hip.  A dramatic dress for summer entertaining.

Millefiori is a glasswork technique which produces distinctive decorative patterns on glassware. The term millefiori is a combination of the Italian words “mille” (thousand) and “fiori” (flowers).  This decorative glass is made by fusing multicolored glass canes together, cutting them crosswise, joining them into new groups and embedding the groups in transparent glass.  The fabric of this suit is reminiscent of millefiori glasswork with circular patterns in turquoise, purple, and lime green on a sky blue ground.  Each circle is liberally highlighted with gold.  The jacket has bracelet length sleeves and a moderate peplum.  Tiny gold filagree buttons decorate the front.  A circular brooch set with turquoise and moonstone beads sparkles on the collar.  A purple silk bow belt defines the waist.

A slim fitting sheath in a lovely Asian print of lavender tinged cherry blossoms on a dark aqua ground.  The print side has delicate beading in the centers of some of the blossoms, adding a touch of sparkle.  The sheath reverses to the iridescent purple silk.  A belt in the print picks up the hem band.  A versatile and elegant dress!

This adorable print is from the 2015 Cotton and Steel collection and depicts polka dots interspersed with sweet kitten faces on a lavender ground.  The sweetheart bodice has a pleated band that stretches under the bust and over the shoulders as straps.
